My Introduction To CrossFit

Through a business networking group I recently joined, I met a fellow trainer named James. He and his partner have a cross fit gym near downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. At our meeting on Wednesday, he invited me to come down, check out his “playground” and to experience my very first  cross fit workout. I was very excited to learn more about James, what he does with his clients and cross fit in general. I knew of and had heard about cross fit, I even have several friends who do cross fit, but I had never experienced it for myself.

Last night, I  took the kids and we went to see James and check out his gym. The girls and I were the only takers on a workout, so James put the boys to work “cleaning up” the gym for him while the girls and I got down to business.   He went through each exercise with us, taking the time to explain how to do each one properly. He walked us through the entire workout, which he referred to as a “challenge”, and explained that we were to do what we could, if we needed to stop that we could and to remember to work at our own pace. Then he started the timer. Oh sure, no pressure!

So there I am in this cross fit gym, both of my girls are  there to try and smoke me and I know it. True, I have more experience than they do in the gym, but they are quite a bit younger than me. I wasn’t really sure how the whole thing was going to play out. I could see it in their eyes, they were only there for bragging rights. Now, there are two types of Moms in the world. There is the type that always lets little Sally win the game of Checkers, Bingo and  Battleship. And then there’s me. If they wanted to beat me at my game, the gym game, they were going to have to do it legit. Period.

The “challenge” went something like this:

  • Row 250 meters
  • 25 sit ups
  • 20 pull ups
  • 15 kettlebell swings
  • 10 T push ups
  • Run 200 meters
  • 25 sit ups
  • 20 pull ups
  • 15 kettlebell swings
  • 10 T push ups
  • Row 250 meters

The goal? Do it hard, do it fast, and do it strong. I did. Now, I know what you’re thinking, ‘Laura, you didn’t let them win?”. I will as kindly and graciously as possible,  give you my reply to that question.

HELL NO!!

I beat them both, though my oldest daughter wasn’t but 15 seconds behind me. As she and I sat there on the rowers together, trying to catch our breath, I smiled at her and said, “Not bad  for just being a Mom huh?” She smiled back at me and said, “Yeah, not bad for a Mom”.

Bottom  line? I love cross fit, I am thankful to James for extending the invitation to my kids and I to come down and “play”and last but definitely not least, I am the proudest Mom in the world right now because my girls kicked butt!

~Just not mine~   😉
