My Favorite Workout Songs

I love my music. Just ask my Mom, she’ll tell ya. As a child, and even more so as a teenager, I was always listening to or singing one of my favorite songs. When I was 12, it was Tiffany’s version of  “I Think We’re Alone Now”. As I grew up it changed to songs like Firehouse’s “Love of a Lifetime”, Bryan Adams’ “Everything I Do (I Do It For You)”, Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”  and Alison Krauss’ “You Say It Best (When You Say Nothing At All)”. While I still like those songs immensely, they have a different meaning in my life now than they did then and they are most definitely not a “one song fits all moments” kind of deal. I’m not sure why, but especially in the last three weeks or so, I’ve been  loving my music even more than normal and lately, I just wanna dance to it. It doesn’t seem to matter if I’m cooking dinner in the kitchen or teaching a TRX class, I’m moving and shaking to the beat. It makes me happy, so why not?! Right?

As I sat down to write this post, I was listening to my iPod. Cascada came on and I got up out of my chair and started dancing. My son came into the room, looked at me like I was higher than a kite and said, “Mom. What. Are. You. Doing?” I laughed and said, “Dancing. Wanna dance with me?”  he raised one eyebrow (because he just figured out how to control them one at a time like that) and said, “Uhhh, sure?”

We started dancing, though he was holding back a little (I know this because I’ve seen him  with his throttle pushed all the way to “Full on  Goofball”, screwing around with his brothers and sisters). He looked up at me after a minute or so and said, “Mom? WHY are we doing this again? I feel like a dork.”

Ouch. Was this comment coming from the baby boy I used to hold in my arms and dance around the family room with while delighting in  the giggles that would ooze out him at every quick turn? Yes. Double ouch.

“Okay,”  I said. “You don’t have to dance with me.  I was  just dancing because I like the music and the beat it has.   It makes me wanna dance, that’s all.”  He rolled his eyes at me. As he turned to walk out of my room he said, “Well if ya love it so much, tell  all  the peeps who read your bloggy thing about it.” as he pointed to my laptop. Give me warm and fuzzy feelings, he did not.  The topic of this blog post, he most certainly did!

Most of us know that listening to music while working out just amplifies the whole experience. There’s nothing like being in the weight room with your  earbuds in when a song comes on that just totally pushes you to do the last set that you were either:

  • A)   Dreading
  •  B)   Not sure you could do
  • C)   Didn’t want to
  • D)   All of the above

What you listen to while you work out has a huge impact on how you perform in the gym. Have you ever noticed?   Trust me on this one, slow beat will slow YOU down. While I’m not a fan of the folks who sit on weight machines and pound out 125 reps in 30 seconds, neither am I  proposing you meander on the treadmill. The whole idea when exercising is to get your heart rate UP, to get the blood flowing and the muscles working. Nothing gets you amped up to do just that like a good, no great, beat.  So, without any more blah, blah, blah, I give you….
